First US offshore wind farm spins into action

It'd been a long time coming but the United States finally has a functioning offshore wind farm. It's the first ever offshore farm that utilizes wind energy in American history, paving the way for a greener future.

"We've jumpstarted a new energy industry here in the USA, with tremendous support of the Block Island community, state and federal officials, and a number of USA supply chain partners who see offshore wind as a new opportunity for their business", said Deepwater Wind CEO Jeffrey Grybowski. This will then be distributed to households and buildings that are tapping into the grid. The Block Island Wind Farm has gone live.

Four of the 30-megawatt wind farm's five turbines are now able to spin at full power, the Providence Journal reports, providing electricity for the New England power gird through a subterranean transmission system.

This is good news and thanks to calculations conducted by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory via the Peregrine supercomputer, it's quite possible for the get one-third of its energy needs from renewable sources. According to WindEurope, the first six months of 2016 saw 114 commercial offshore wind turbines fully grid connected. The overall offshore wind resource potential in the United States is estimated to be four times the generating capacity of the entire USA electricity grid, according to a National Renewable Energy Laboratory report.

Seahawks' Russell Wilson seeks to shake off 5-pick day
The Seattle Seahawks' 38-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday was one of the worst outings we've seen since, well, Week 12. Packers receiver Jordy Nelson sounds as if he's running out of superlatives to describe quarterback Aaron Rodgers .

"With this project, we've put hundreds of our local workers to work at-sea and at our world-class ports". The facility has a capacity of 30 MW and is expected to produce around 125,000 MWh of electricity annually. Winds tend to blow harder and more consistently in the ocean, which helps offshore turbines generate more power.

National Grid said that is more than enough to meet Block Island's current demand and the excess will be redirected to mainland Rhode Island through a submarine cable.

Grybowski said the industry is focusing on markets where states have indicated a strong interest in developing an offshore resource, including NY and MA. The company has the financial backing of New York-based hedge fund DE Shaw and is looking to cement a power purchase agreement with the Long Island Power Authority for the first 90-MW South Fork phase.

"As the Ocean State, we're motivated by our shared belief that we need to produce and consume cleaner, more sustainable energy and leave our kids a healthier planet - but also by this tremendous economic opportunity", she added. Groups representing the fishing industry in four states sought to delay the auction.
