Sensex recovers, up 107 points

The gains in the dollar against other global currencies and a lower opening in the domestic equity markets weighed on the rupee, forex dealers said.

Notable gainers were Axis Bank 2.35 per cent, Reliance 1.75 per cent, HCL Technology 1.53 per cent and Bajaj Finance 1.39 per cent. The gauge had lost about 95 points in the previous session.

At 9.50 am, the Sensex at the BSE was trading 74 points higher at 26,677 while the Nifty at the NSE was trading 24 points up at 8,207.

India is seen as relatively better placed than other emerging markets to weather the impact of higher US interest rates because of the country's stronger economic growth and record high foreign exchange reserves of more than $300 billion.

The Fed is widely expected to increase interest rates by 25 basis points, reflecting its first rate hike in a year.

Among other Asian markets, Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 1.77 per cent and Shanghai Composite shed 0.73 per cent while Japan's Nikkei was up 0.10 per cent.

London's FTSE dropped 0.07%.

The Sensex opened lower at 26,497.71 and dipped to a low of 26,407.58 before bouncing back at 26,737.86, it was quoting at 26,684.94 at 1100 hours, a gain of 82.10, or 0.31 per cent. In sync with the trend, the small-cap index rose 0.21% and mid-cap ended nearly flat. ONGC's shares slipped 2 percent. USA equities closed higher yesterday while the Dow Jones industrial average closed in on another milestone. The benchmark index is still down almost 3 percent so far in 2016, but could close the year in positive territory if the market witnesses an end-of-year rally. The total turnover on BSE came in at Rs 2,582.33 crore, higher than Rs 2,383.04 crore registered during the previous trading session.
