Indian contender Visaranai bows out of Oscar race

The makers of the film said they tried their best to highlight the critically acclaimed project at the prestigious awards gala. The last Indian film that made it to the final five nominees at the Oscars was Ashutosh Gowariker's "Lagaan".

On Thursday night, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced it had narrowed the pack of foreign-language film contenders from the 85 that were being considered for a nomination.

The team is confident "it will get better and better every year for India, now with the government supporting our films".

Variety tipped "Under Sanden" (English title: Land of Mine) as an early favourite but it will face stiff competition from German entry "Toni Erdmann", which won the best film, director, actress, actor and screenwriter prizes at the European Film Awards earlier this month.

Xavier Dolan is thrilled his movie "It's Only the End of the World" is one of nine films in the running for a best foreign-language Oscar nomination. "Visaranai" features Dinesh, Samuthirakani, Ajay Ghosh and Kishore in the lead.

The saga of a single-antlered deer in Harlem just ended tragically
But as soon as the decision was made, the deer died at the animal shelter because of "stress", according to the mayor's office. The state government jumped on the opportunity to use the deer's death as a way to attack de Blasio's administration.

This shortlist will be winnowed down to the category's five nominees by specially invited committees in NY.

"Visaranai" was the ninth Tamil film to have been chosen as a hopeful to bring the Oscar statuette to India.

The Oscars shortlist for the foreign language category has been revealed ahead of next year's ceremony.

The shortlist will be further trimmed down to the five to be announced on January 24, next year.

The films that have made it to the list are "Tanna" from Australian, "It's Only the End of the World" from Canada, "Land of Mine" from Denmark, "Toni Erdmann" from Germany, Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi's "The Salesman", "The King's Choice" from Norway, Russia's "Paradise", "A Man Called Ove" from Sweden and "My Life as a Zucchini" from Switzerland.
