Salvation Army distributes toys for Wilson kids

Christmas is a time of giving and holiday cheer, but for some families in the Mountain Empire who are already struggling to make ends meet, it can be a burdensome time of year.

Carol Szarenski woke up Friday morning with a strong feeling of goal and eagerness to get to work at the Salvation Army's Angel Tree distribution day.

The Salvation Army of Onondaga County needs just under $150,000 to fund 40 programs across the county.

Those wishing to make a financial donation toward the effort may donate directly to a kettle in St. Croix County or mail donations to Grace Place 505 W. 8th St., New Richmond WI 54017.

"With many people just carrying a cell phone and a couple of credit cards in their pockets, carrying change is becoming a thing of the past". This year, Moore said it is not uncommon for three sites to be missed everyday. She was staying at the Macomb's Answer to Temporary Shelter run by the Salvation Army when she first saw the classified ad looking for bell ringers to work for the charity. Along with the rings, she left a note asking that the money the rings generated go toward toys for needy children.

"I've been doing it for about 25 years, our company has been doing it for seven".

The toy drive supports The Salvation Army's Christmas Assistance Program that provides over 1,000 families with the assistance they need to enjoy their holiday season regardless of their financial situation. As of December 10, the campaign had raised $2.1 million of its goal.

"In our counting room, we open all the different kettles and we track them by site".

"As we enter the final days of the campaign, we're praying for a Christmas miracle", said Lt. Joseph Hansen. The volunteer was going through the buckets and she's like, 'Hey! "Lots of cheers", he said.

"We heard about it and Taz and the group asked me if I'd come down and my granddaughter says 'oh, nonna, I want to help!"

To adopt these kids, all one has to do is call the Salvation Army at 287-6979, Miles said. "I'm hearing lots of thank yous today, especially if they get a pink card".
