Barton joined the Rangers in May 2016 on a two-year deal, however, his contract was terminated after just eight appearances for the Light Blues, following his argument with teammate Andy Halliday and manager Mark Warburton.

Joey Barton is set to re-sign for Burnley on a short-term deal until the end of the season, subject to global clearance.

He had been training with old club Burnley and it is with them that he has agreed a new deal until the end of the season, beginning in January - subject to worldwide clearance.

The 34-year-old added on Twitter: "Its great to be back!"

He left Burnley in May after helping them win the Championship title. He previously played for Manchester City, Newcastle and Queens Park Rangers in the Premier League.

The midfielder's contract was cancelled by Rangers last month after a training ground altercation back in September, following the 5-1 Old Firm derby defeat to Celtic.

Barton had been unable to sign for any club until January, but Burnley have now confirmed that he will be wearing claret and blue again come the new year.

He was also slapped with a one-match ban by the Scottish Football Association (SFA) for violating betting rules while playing for Rangers.
