Edwin Encarnacion Agrees To Three-Year Deal With Indians

The 33-year-old Encarnacion reportedly signed a three-year deal for $65 million and is expected to replace Mike Napoli at first base and designated hitter.

Encarnacion reportedly turned down a four-year offer from Toronto worth at least $80 million before hitting the open market.

Cleveland, coming off a loss in Game 7 of the World Series, saw an opportunity to add a powerful right-handed bat to its lineup and went all-in. More likely, the Rangers will bring him back if he'll do one year, and will pass on him if he wants more, and will look at the next tier of 1B/DH types. The Cubs and Red Sox will enter 2017 as strong favorites to meet in the next Fall Classic, but Encarnacion is the bat Cleveland needed to ensure they remain firmly in the mix. But it could be equal to that deal if he's still productive and the Indians pick up the option for the 2020 season.

Despite the fit from a baseball standpoint, signing a brand-name slugger to a deal worth $20 million a year is still a gamble for a team like the Indians. Over the past two seasons combined, Encarnacion has spent more time as a DH (171 starts) than at first base (133).

With Cleveland, Encarnacion will presumably split time between first base and DH with Carlos Santana, who shared those spots with Napoli past year with the Tribe.

Edwin Encarnacion rumors indicate the All-Star hitter is going to be just fine. In a career-high 160 games, Encarnacion hit.263/.357/.529 with 42 homers (tied for a career high), 99 runs scored (a career high), and 127 RBI (also a career high). He's the only player in the big leagues with 30 or more home runs in each of the last five seasons.

The Indians' infield alignment, already one of the most potent in the majors, just became more risky: Encarnacion or Carlos Santana at first; Jason Kipnis at second; Francisco Lindor at short; and Jose Ramirez at third. Sources tell TSN Kinzer countered that offer by asking the Blue Jays for $100 million over four years. The Indians do have an extra Draft pick in Competitive Balance Round B (70th overall) in June.

The signing doesn't come without risks - Encarnacion is on the wrong side of his peak, his strikeout rate is increasing while his home run rate is diminishing.

One World Series trip has apparently whetted the appetite of Indians owner Paul Dolan for more.
