Friends and family of Caitlin Nelson, the 20-year-old Sacred Heart University student who died following a pancake-eating contest on campus, remember her as "a shining light in the community with a heart of gold".

The contest was held on Thursday as a part of a fraternity and sorority event, KFOR reported.

When Nelson started choking at the contest, two nursing students who were there immediately began lifesaving measures and were quickly joined by police officers and paramedics, Kalamaras said. The paper also writes that Nelson's father was a Port Authority police officer killed in the September 11 World Trade Center attacks. Caitlin Nelson majored in social work at the Catholic school based in Fairfield.

Nelson's father, James Nelson, was a Port Authority of NY and New Jersey police officer killed in the September 11 attacks.

On Friday morning, Caitlin was transported to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital to undergo further testing as her medical condition was declining. We did everything we could to help him, "said Lieutenant Robert Kalamaras".

Please keep Caitlin, her loved ones, and the entire Sacred Heart community, in your prayers.

He also went into the smoking World Trade Center to help rescue workers during the 1993 bombing, despite having asthma, according to the Daily Mail. A Mass was also dedicated to her, along with an impromptu candlelight vigil.

According to the Connecticut Post, the Sacred Heart University student was a universally "loved and adored" counselor.

"She indicated throughout her life that she was an organ donor".

The Fairfield Police Department said cops rushed to the charity dinner and attempted to clear Nelson's airway, but their attempts failed.
