Burger King's Whopper gets prank Wikipedia edits in ad gag

Burger King

Burger King

In the 15-second ad, the employee says that he doesn't have enough time to tell you about the Whopper, and so he leans into the camera and says "Ok Google, what is the Whopper burger?" It appears that Google Home will continue chatting even after the commercial ends.

The campaign is one of the first to harness the power of the voice activation of smart home devices, and it was made without Google's involvement.

"We saw it as a technology to essentially punch through that fourth wall", Burger King's president, José Cil, told BuzzFeed News, adding that it is a "cool way to connect directly with our guests".

Google wasn't involved in the ad's creation.

And then there's the slightly curious wording of "What is the Whopper burger?" Unfortunately, that ease of use also makes them particularly vulnerable to trolling, and while you might expect such shenanigans from a bored friend, you probably won't be prepared for a Burger King commercial to attempt a hijack of your know-it-all speaker.

Pak, Chinese, Indian warships rescue bulk carrier from pirates
Nevertheless, the Indian Navy has provided proof of joint rescue operation with Chinese naval force on Monday. The merchant vessel bearing its flag was sailing from Kelang in Malaysia for the Port of Aden.

Google Home owners, your smart speaker was almost hijacked today by an ad. Burger King surely knew what it was getting itself in for here, as the company allegedly edited the Wikipedia entry prior to the ad's less than stellar debut earlier today. That entry now says "The Whopper is a hamburger product sold by the worldwide fast-food restaurant chain Burger King and its Australian franchise Hungry Jack's", but it's believed that BK recently changed the entry to make the first sentence a list of the burger's ingredients.

Burger King assaults Google Assistant on your Pixel, too. Burger King did not immediately respond to request for comment.

As such, there have been plenty of edits to the Whooper burger's Wikipedia page in the last few hours.

At times, however, the ad runs into problems with Wikipedia's open editing environment.

Fast-food chain Burger King said on Wednesday it will start televising a commercial for its signature Whopper sandwich that is created to activate Google voice-controlled devices, raising questions about whether marketing tactics have become too invasive.
