Emma Morano, world's oldest person, dies in Italy at age 117

Morano, the world's oldest person, died on Friday at the age of 117.

"She didn't suffer", said Morano's longtime doctor, Dr. Carlo Bava, who reported that she passed away very peacefully, while sitting in her rocking chair at home.

"She didn't suffer. I'm happy she didn't suffer but passed away that way, tranquilly", Bava said.

She was believed to be the last-surviving person born in the 1800s after Susannah Mushatt Jones, 116, of New York City, died in May 2016. "And cookies. But I do not eat much because I have no teeth", she said. "We will always remember the strength (she possessed) for moving forward, her combative attitude against adversity", said Verbania Mayor Silvia Marchionini.

Arsenal contract talks on hold until summer-Mesut Ozil
And Monday's 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace saw renewed calls for the Frenchman to clarify whether he intends to stay or leave the Emirates at the end of the season.

While she had been spending more time sleeping and less time speaking in recent weeks, she had eaten her daily raw egg and biscuits that day, he said. She lost a boyfriend in the First World War, and then married a quite abusive man, whom she did not love, Xinhua news agency cited local media. Since then, she supported herself, lived alone, and worked in a jute factory until the age of 65.

She also defied health advice, Dr Bava said on Saturday.

Only a year ago the Pope sent her a signed parchment as a personal blessing, and Italy's President Sergio Mattarella personally congratulated her on reaching a very rare and remarkable milestone. Since then it was clear, "she was slowly fading away", and spending almost all day in bed, Bava said. But past year Rosi Santoni, one of the relatives who helped look after her, said she had plenty of family to care for her and had many friends in the town.

She attributed her longevity to leaving her husband in 1938 shortly after the death of her only child at the age of seven months, and to the inclusion in her daily diet of two raw eggs and a little raw minced meat.
