The U.S. Senate voted 54-45 Friday to confirm President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch, in a vote decided largely along party lines.

Judge Gorsuch was on Friday confirmed by the Senate to be appointed as the 113th justice of the Supreme Court. When Democrats blocked the nomination on Thursday with a procedural filibuster, Republicans responded by making a dramatic and historic change in the Senate rules to allow Gorsuch and all future Supreme Court nominees to pass through the Senate with a simple 51-vote majority instead of the previous 60-vote threshold.

"As a deep believer in the rule of law, Judge Gorsuch will serve the American people with distinction", Trump said in a statement. "Nobody, ' Roberts said, 'ever went to a ballgame to see the umpire.' But a great umpire is exactly the person we want to see when we go to court". "Judge Gorsuch is a strict constitutionalist who believes that a judge's personal policy preferences should not affect the outcome of a case.

The confirmation of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court is the culmination of a sordid maneuver by Republican Senators to steal a U.S. Supreme Court nomination from a sitting U.S. President who was a Democrat". Johnny Isakson of Georgia, who has been recovering from back surgery, did not vote.

Voting no were 43 Democrats, 0 Republicans and 2 independents.

McConnell's detractors recall that in 1988 McConnell voted to confirm Justice Anthony Kennedy during the final year of Ronald Reagan's presidency.

Gorsuch will be sworn in Monday and will quickly begin confronting cases of effect, including one involving separation of church and state that the justices will take up in less than two weeks. In Hobby Lobby v. Sebelius and Little Sisters of the Poor v. Burwell, Gorsuch wrote that a requirement that employers provide contraceptive coverage for their employees could make the religious complicit in what they consider a sin.

G7 seeks broad support to isolate Syria's Assad
Mattis said that he is confident that US involvement in Syria will not spiral out of control. He said he would ask The Hague and the global community to investigate the allegations.

McConnell himself told reporters Friday that "the most consequential decision I've ever been involved in was the decision to let the president being elected a year ago pick the Supreme Court nominee".

After he is sworn in, Gorsuch will restore the court's conservative voting majority that existed before Scalia's death.

Some lawmakers have expressed concern by how the fallout of Scalia's death has impacted both the Senate and the Supreme Court.

Gorsuch's confirmation is a big win for the Trump administration which has been burdened by Senate investigations into possible Russian ties during the presidential campaign and the failed healthcare bill and Obamacare replacement, the American Health Care Act, among other controversies.

In my time in the Senate, I have had the distinct honor of playing a key role in the confirmation of fourteen Supreme Court nominees. I've had many times during those periods where I've had to pinch myself to say, 'Yeah, you're really here.

Republicans said Democrats had no one to blame but themselves, launching a filibuster they knew Republicans were determined to overcome. Gorsuch could be expected to serve for decades, while Trump could make further appointments to the high court to make it even more solidly conservative because three of the eight justices are 78 or older. The court's current term is scheduled to end in June.

Among the groups congratulating Gorsuch on his confirmation were the US Chamber of Commerce business lobbying group, the National Rifle Association gun rights group and anti-abortion activists.
