Nintendo developing SNES mini

The NES Classic continues to remain in high demand even though the last of them have already been manufactured, which will nearly certainly leave some sadly twiddling their gaming thumbs.

Sources within Nintendo have confirmed to EuroGamer that the company is set to release the SNES Classic Edition in late 2017. And since Nintendo released the NES Classic Edition during the holidays, you probably won't get your hands on the new SNES until the end of the year.

Functionally, it makes sense that Nintendo would use whatever production facitlities had been producing NES Minis to start up production of the SNES Mini instead. The SNES refresh is expected to follow suit with the same structural form. If the mini SNES arrives better stocked and more widely available, then perhaps there truly were genuine issues getting those NES Classic Editions churned out, with Nintendo ultimately giving up trying soon after.

The SNES mini will reportedly come with a library of games pre-installed, along with a plug-and-play setup similar to its predecessor, the NES Classic.

US VP Mike Pence meets Indonesian president on Asia tour
The trip so far has been dominated by USA and allies' concerns about North Korea's nuclear and missile development efforts. But the meetings could indicate how forcefully the US will pressure Japan to further open its farm and automotive sectors.

Nintendo has been in the news a lot lately for its rather wacky decision to cancel the popular NES Classic Edition.

Nintendo have yet to comment on the report. The re-launched NES had 30 titles to choose from, so the SNES may include even more. There's no reason Nintendo couldn't treat these memory lane gizmos as Disney has handled home video versions of its classic films, often putting years between rereleases. We don't want to go through the same experience with the SNES Mini. However, Nintendo has yet to confirm it. As a reminder there are heaps of classics to choose from, including Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart, Donkey Kong Country and StarFox.

The report could explain why the NES Classic was recently discontinued despite sustained demand.
