Officials React To Sonny Perdue's Appointment To Serve As Secretary Of Agriculture

Sonny Perdue's surprise victory over Gov. Roy Barnes in 2002 - making him Georgia's first GOP governor since Reconstruction - triggered a Republican wave in Georgia that flipped the state Senate and then the state House.

George "Sonny" Perdue gets bipartisan vote of 87-11 to become the next secretary of agriculture.

Additionally, NFU urges Perdue to quickly review and approve the Farmer Fair Practices Rules, "which will provide farmers and ranchers with basic protections against anti-competitive practices". I look forward to working with him to support agriculture and rural development programs, which are important to Tennessee farmers, families and businesses. Trump has proposed a 21 percent cut in USDA programs and has harshly criticized some global trade deals, saying they have killed American jobs.

The tardiness of Perdue's nomination caused some heartburn among agricultural interests as discussions on trade, budgets and a new farm bill that needs to be authorized by the fall of 2018 have picked up steam.

Chappell finally wins on PGA Tour in 180th career start
Meanwhile, Kevin Chappell survived a roller-coaster front nine with three birdies, one double bogey and three bogeys. Grace shot a two-under 70 on Saturday, while Huh finished eagle-birdie to card a one-under 71 in windy conditions.

Although Perdue has received considerable support in the Senate and from agricultural interest groups, ethics watchdogs have raised concerns about his agro-business holdings.

As tensions between the USA and Canada grow over the dairy trade dispute, the National Milk Producers Federation said Perdue's support of the export markets is critical.

Trump will sign the executive order after a meeting with 15 farmers from across the country, including Zippy Duvall, the president of the American Farm Bureau; Bill Northey, the Iowa Secretary of Agriculture; and Lisa Johnson Billy, a farmer and former Oklahoma House member. PCG President Johnie Reed, a cotton producer from Kress, TX, said, "We congratulate Secretary Perdue, and we know that he will hit the ground running, as he has a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing agriculture and the cotton industry in particular". Perdue's cousin, Sen. David Perdue, R-Ga., voted "present" and presided over the vote.

"I think farmers will be extremely pleased to see former Gov. Sonny Perdue confirmed as secretary for the United States Department of Agriculture", said Uphoff, 42, who farms 1,000 acres of corn and soybeans near Findlay and also raises cattle. Like Vilsack, Perdue was governor of a large diversified agricultural state who takes over USDA with very broad support. "I'll also be challenging the new Ag Secretary to strongly reject a plan by President Trump to cut funding for the USDA by more than 20 percent-a move that, if approved, would devastate the American farm economy and put the livelihoods of Minnesota families at risk". "He understands the impact farm labor shortages, trade agreements and regulations have on a farmer's bottom line and ability to stay in business from one season to the next".
