Google is updating its search to demote fake news

Google frequently tweaks the algorithms that return relevant search results, sometimes privately, and other times publicly.

Both Google and Facebook have taken steps in recent months to curb the spread of hoaxes and misinformation amid concerns these may have influenced voters in the 2016 United States election.

We're certain that Google will be releasing reports very soon on results of extensive testing that show that Google Search is cleaner than ever before.

Ranking Signals Without revealing too much about its own formula, Google says its ranking signals have been adjusted to surface more authoritative pages and demote fake news.

Google also planned to change its "autocomplete" tool, which suggests search terms, to allow users to more easily to flag up troubling content, he said. "The content that appears in these features is generated algorithmically and is a reflection of what people are searching for and what's available on the web", Gomes said. The new guidelines include details of what Google calls "low-quality websites" that might have "misleading information, unexpected offensive results, hoaxes and unsupported conspiracy theories".

Ensuring that fake news doesn't surface in search requires "more structural" changes to the way search works, the company was quoted as saying Tuesday.

Panneerselvam toughens stance on merger as noose around Dinakaran tightens — AIADMK crisis
The AIADMK has been divided into two factions; the Panneerselvam camp and the Sasikala camp (Palaniswami camp after her arrest). He said the decision reflects the collective opinion of the grassroot level workers of the party, its MLAs, MPs and ministers.

The moves follow months after criticism of Google and Facebook Inc. for hosting misleading information, particular tied to the 2016 US presidential election.

According to a Recode report, the top search engine, Google, will be updating its algorithms. Google has a team of human evaluators that rate the quality and accuracy of search results in general.

The changes to the search algorithm are designed so that "issues similar to the Holocaust denial results" are less likely to appear, Google said.

Watch this space for latest news on Google products. Facebook tried to solve the problem last fall by implementing a verification mechanisms to combat fake news, but it's not clear that it's working. The company didn't specify how many queries that really is - but the search-engine-focused news site Search Engine Land reported that Google estimated in 2015 that it handles 3 billion searches per day. The company seeks to bring some wisdom back into areas where it is highly needed.

Under the featured snippets which shows up as summary boxes on top of the search results, users will find a' feedback' option. (We've reached out to Google, but representatives didn't immediately respond.) Will Google's algorithms take over, or will an actual human make the call?
