Mary Keitany sets "women only" world record in London Marathon

Wanjiru said he felt comfortable running at world-record pace for sections of the race and is still aiming to break Dennis Kimetto's time of 2:02:57, set in Berlin in 2014.

Radcliffe had also been the holder of the women's-only record thanks to her time in the 2002 Chicago Marathon but Keitany squeezed past that by 17 seconds. Tirunesh Dibaba was 55 seconds behind Keitany while fellow Ethiopian, Aselefech Mergia, was third.

In the women's wheelchair race Switzerland's Manuela Schar took the title for the first time.

Jo Pavey insists the chest infections that have dogged her training for Sunday's London Marathon will not impede her chances of qualifying for this summer's British World Championships team.

Since the race's inception in 1981, hundreds of thousands of people have taken part - around 50,000 each year.

"We did a lap each and it was the most hard thing we've ever done in our lives I have to say!" Keitany stuck to her plan and distanced herself from the other East African elite women by just the third kilometer.

Seven officers and staff from Leicestershire Police will have competed in 36 marathons between them when the compete in Sunday's London Marathon.

Earlier, Britain's six time Paralympic champion David Weir took victory in the men's wheelchair race, beating his rival and last year's victor Marcel Hug in a sprint finish.

Carlos Watkins Joins Familiar Faces with the Houston Texans
Sashi Brown did not make the call to Myles Garrett to inform the defensive end the Browns made him the first pick in the draft. Last night, the Houston Texans traded their first-round pick this year and next year to select Deshaun Watson.

A 73-year-old is lacing up his shoes for tomorrow's London Marathon - after taking part EVERY year since it started in 1981. I'll very much be treating it as a trial race, but I'm not complacent about it, we have a lot of good British girls running.

"To be honest, two or three months ago I didn't even think I'd get on the start line just because I've been struggling with a little bit of depression so to get here and to race and to win, and to beat Tanni's record, is just an honour".

He says his wife and 11-year-old twins are very supportive.

She continued: "I dedicate each mile to someone or something that I love during marathons but I always keep the last mile for my dad".

A further $100,000 will be awarded to any runner in the men's race who runs a sub-2:05:00 time, and to any runner who runs 2:18:00 or less in the women's race.

He staged a superb recovery to finish second behind Kenya's Daniel Wanjiru.

"To get in my training I've been going out at 3am or 4am for runs". That was nine seconds faster than Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia, while Bedan Karoki was third.

The shock of seeing Bekele gaining on him appeared to refocus Wanjiru and he extended his lead late on, consoling Bekele with a warm hug when the latter crossed the line.
