Tensions rise after Turkish attack on Syrian Kurds

Fighting broke out on Wednesday along the northeast Syria border between Turkish forces and Kurdish militiamen, a monitor said, a day after deadly Turkish air strikes on the area. He said it was done more as a "notification as opposed to coordination".

Washington is hoping the SDF, a Syrian Arab-Kurdish alliance dominated by the YPG, will push into the IS bastion of Raqa in Syria, but is wary of upsetting Turkey, a key North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally. "We respect Syria and Iraq's territorial integrity", but Turkey had "a legitimate right with these interventions" because of the threats to Turkey posed by the YPG and the PKK.

Dorrian said the coalition let the Turks know that the amount of time provided before the strikes was inadequate to assure the safety of forces on the ground.

US forces operating in northeastern Syria are working in a very large "operations box", Dorrian explained, and need adequate coordination and notification of impending operations in the region to ensure their safety. "The regime in Turkey has consistently harmed the good neighborly relations through countless violations against our citizens and fighters in northern Syria", the SDF said.

The Turkish airstrikes on Tuesday killed 20 members of the People's Protection Units, or YPG, in Syria, and five peshmerga fighters in Iraq.

Andrej Sekera scored an early goal for the Oilers, who took the first two games on Pacific Division champion Anaheim's home ice. Pageau pulled them back within one yet again when he tipped a Zack Smith point shot past Lundqvist with three minutes left.

But the U.S. State Department said on April 25 that the Sinjar air strikes killed members of the Iraqi Kurdish Peshmerga forces, considered an important ally in the U.S. -led coalition against IS militants. "These are our partner forces".

The YPG meanwhile asked the US -led coalition battling IS to provide air cover over northern Syria, to protect them from Turkish and Syrian government air raids.

The Turkish government also stated it will "continue its fight against terrorism of all kinds" and the highlighted that "terrorist elements can not be legitimate partners in the fight against terrorism". "We demand that the United States establish a no-fly zone to protect us against further aggression".

Overnight to Tuesday, Turkish airplanes conducted strikes against facilities of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, which Turkey deems as terrorist, in Sinjar mountains (Iraq's northwest) and Karachok mountains (in Syria's northeast). A Twitter account monitoring the Syrian war quoted a YPG fighter saying that "all operations in Raqqa and Tabqah were halted until the coalition takes action against Turkish attacks". Partner forces in Syria include the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Syrian Arab Coalition, he said. The city was also home to ISIS' main prison and served as a staging area for ISIS fighters.
