North Korea Says Detained American Had Intended To 'Subvert The Country'

A USA citizen detained last month in North Korea is being investigated for seeking to overthrow the government, the country's state-controlled news agency said, reports the Wall Street Journal.

The WeChat account of the overseas edition of the People's Daily, in its reaction to the KCNA piece, said it was clear that North Korea's nuclear and missile activities were a threat to China.

Another American man is now being detained by the North Korean government for allegedly committing "hostile acts", state-run media reports.

This has included commentaries from official publications of China's ruling Communist Party warning that North Korea's nuclear ambitions "put itself and the whole region into dire peril". "For example, North Korea freed three US citizens during visits by former Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter in 2009 and 2010, respectively".

"I characterized to President Putin (of Russia) our relationship was the lowest since the Cold War", said Tillerson.

"We are preparing additional sanctions if it turns out North Korea's actions warrant additional sanctions", Tillerson said on Wednesday (May 3) in remarks to State Department employees.

The official also added that North Korea appeared to adjust its level of criticism by using what appears to be the pen name of Kim Chol.

Recent missile launches by North Korea despite sanctions and severe warnings from the United States and others in the global community have raised tension in the region.

The U.S. Pacific Command said Tuesday it sent the Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Cheyenne to the U.S. Navy base at Sasebo, Japan.

It said North Korea's nuclear program was needed for the "existence and development" of the country and "can never be changed nor shaken". It criticised China's "ignorant politicians and media" for supporting stricter sanctions on North Korea.

Russian Federation has already taken over the supply of jet fuel to North Korea after China halted exports two years ago, according to the industry sources in China.

DPRK is the acronym for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Russia, the other major supplier of oil to North Korea, exported about 36,000 tonnes of oil products in 2015, the latest year for which figures are available, according to United Nations data.

Trump did not say what conditions would be needed for such a meeting or when it could happen, but White House spokesman Sean Spicer said "clearly conditions are not there right now".

Trump warned in an interview with Reuters on Thursday a "major, major conflict" with North Korea was possible, while China has said the Korean situation could slip out of control.

A nuclear test has yet to happen, but North Korea's failed ballistic missile launch last week marked the hermit state's latest show of defiance.
