Serial killer suspect went undiscovered for more than a year

Police announced earlier Monday that Saucedo is the suspect in at least 12 shootings across the Valley that left nine people dead and wounded two others.

Aaron Saucedo, initially arrested on April 19 for a fatal shooting in 2015, was re-booked on Monday into a Maricopa county jail and is now facing 26 charges for a total of 12 shootings, reports USA Today.

From August 2015 to July 2016, someone was gunning down victims after dark in a largely Latino neighborhood of Phoenix as they stood outside homes or sat in cars.

The shooter stalked victims after dark, police have said, picking victims who were either outside of their homes or sitting in cars.

Police fielded thousands of tips, went door-to-door in seeking information and analyzed ballistics from a different, unrelated serial shooting case.

Police spent more than a year looking for the suspect, Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton said at a press conference Monday.

"Now my heart goes out to those families, and I hope they can get justice, too", said Lora Romero.

Saucedo has been in custody several weeks on charges he killed his mother's boyfriend in August 2015, Police Sgt. Jon Howard said.

Manuel Castro Garcia, 19, was murdered outside his home on June 10, 2016.

On Monday, he was charged with another eight counts of homicide, three counts of attempted homicide, six counts of drive-by shooting, five counts of aggravated assault and one count each of endangerment, discharging a firearm at a structure, discharging a firearm at a non-residential structure and criminal damage.

Saucedo was a bus driver for the city of Phoenix through a temp agency for several months in July through August 2015, Phoenix police said. Investigators allege Saucedo pulled up alongside the vehicle and opened fire, hitting the victims more than 30 times.

They said there is now no known motive for the shootings.

Authorities are yet to identify a motive behind the killings but they believe Saucedo acted alone. However, they said, none of the evidence matched. Others were afraid to come forward because many are immigrants in the US illegally or don't have their paperwork in order.

- Diego Verdugo-Sanchez was shot dead on April 1, 2016 in front of his home.

Lora Romero said Saucedo's arrest, while a relief, reopened the wounds of losing her father - a hard-working, generous man who loved to watch football, play softball and tell amusing stories to his kids. "But they wanted me to find out from them and not the news".

One of the victims, a 21-year-old man who survived being shot at point-blank range on July 11, 2016, while sitting in a vehicle with his 4-year-old nephew, told Phoenix NBC affiliate KPNX in April that police had recently visited him with several photos of suspects.

"I'm happy my kids are going to be able to walk outside and I won't have to fear that they're going to get shot", Pastrana said.
