Brazil Announces End of Zika Virus State of Emergency

Brazil on Thursday announced the end of its national Zika emergency, AP reported.

The virus had affected nearly 30 countries as the World Health Organisation imposed an global emergency.

The Guardian reports that during the 2016 Olympics, the threat of the Zika virus was at its peak.

Positioned in the middle of the 2016 outbreak, Brazil launched a comprehensive mosquito eradication campaign throughout the country, an effort that the health ministry credited for reducing Zika cases. According to Brazil's Ministry of Health, there were 7,911 cases of Zika from January to April this year, compared to 170,535 cases reported in the same time last year.

Brazilian health ministry official Adeilson Cavalcante said "the end of the emergency does not signify the end of being vigilant and providing assistance".

The DOH has strongly urged pregnant women to take steps to prevent mosquito bites and protect themselves from sexual transmission of Zika throughout their entire pregnancy. Microcephaly is a condition where a baby's head is smaller than normal because the brain does not develop properly.

Always Dreaming Wins a Thrilling 143rd Kentucky Derby
Pletcher's penchant for saturating the Derby field with entrants - 45 in all - had yielded only a 2010 victory with Super Saver. Always Dreaming was followed across the finish line by a pair of long shots, Lookin At Lee (33-1) and Battle of Midway (40-1).

Back in 2015, the world was introduced to zika virus because it became an epidemic.

"Mosquito control is critical to preventing Zika virus and minimizing the spread of West Nile Virus and other mosquito borne diseases", Commissioner Quarles said. "We join Secretary Glisson and the Kentucky Department for Public Health in encouraging all Kentuckians to take every possible measure to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds".

"Overall, for women who have had exposures to Zika virus, the risk of maternal infection is low", said lead researcher Dr. Rashmi Rao, an obstetrician and gynecologist with the University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center. And, the World Health Organisation denounced their global emergency over the virus back in November 2016 so hopefully it'll continue to decrease across all regions.

However, doctors have warned that victims of the disease must not be forgotten.

World Health Organization warned that Zika is "here to stay", even when cases of it fall off, and that fighting the disease will be an ongoing battle.
