He said his head was "up in the clouds, and when I woke up, I was 4-over after six [holes]", but he was obviously happy with his finish, which included a birdie at the 16th. "When I missed the greens, I did it in the right spots and when I needed a par, I was able to do it". Two players failed to make the cut entirely.

During the first round of THE PLAYERS Championship, Garcia teed up his shot and let it rip. Day, however, made three bogeys over his last four holes and had to settle for a 2-under score. "I turned a poor round into a decent round". I could never really get any momentum.

"I hit a good shot", he said. Rory McIlroy lies on +1, with Shane Lowry a shot further back.

The last to do so on the famed island green was Willy Wilcox in the second round of last year's event. Until he reached one of the most famous holes in golf, that is.

Garcia said it was 12th ace in competition. I don't know, it can do anything.

After getting engaged in January, Sergio Garcia won his first major at The Masters in April and on Thursday, he became just the eighth person to hit a hole-in-one at the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass during The Players Championship.

"Got off to a bad start but managed to have a great finish and tomorrow I'll go out there a little calmer and get back into this tournament".

"I think I wasn't quite in the tournament because of everything that's been going on after the Masters win, and media and people congratulating you left, right and centre. A few distractions earlier this year kind of derailed that a little bit which is understandable, I had to be there with my mum, and now I'm ready to focus on my golf". He walked off the green with a double-bogey five.

McGirt enjoyed a one-shot lead over compatriot JB Holmes, with Italy's Francesco Molinari and former Open champion Louis Oosthuizen carding matching rounds of 69.
