Electronics ban on flights What next

Emirates, the Middle East's largest airline, this week cited the ban on electronics as one of the reasons for an 80 percent drop in profits a year ago.

Earlier Thursday, Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly met with senators from relevant oversight committees in a secure Capitol Hill facility to deliver a classified briefing to discuss numerous security issues "including threats to aviation", Lapan said.

Department of Homeland Security officials spoke with airline industry representatives about the electronics ban on Thursday, according to Homeland Security and industry sources.

Senior U.S. administration officials have declined to elaborate on any threats that may have prompted the ban, saying only that commercial airlines are still a target of terrorists who are trying to smuggle explosives in electronic devices.

A European Union spokeswoman confirmed the call with EU commissioners and transport ministers had been scheduled with Kelly for Friday.

European regulators warned that placing hundreds of devices in the hold on long-haul flights could compromise safety if poorly deactivated lithium-ion batteries catch fire.

The EU and the United States will hold talks next week on a possible U.S. airline ban on carry-on computers amid concerns it could cause massive disruption as the hectic summer travel season gets underway.

Part of what worked for Boston involved beating Washington at its own up-tempo game with 15 fastbreak points in the first quarter. The host has won all 10 games between the Wizards and Celtics this season - four in the regular season and six in the playoffs.

The action would extend a limited ban that was put in place in March.

A US ban on laptops and tablets in cabins of trans-Atlantic flights to the United States appeared all but inevitable Friday after Department of Homeland Security officials briefed European governments on a proposal that would affect millions of passengers.

CBS News reported that the Ministry of internal security of the United States considering a ban, which could affect flights to the United States from the United Kingdom.

A congressional official said Homeland Security was likely to expand the ban soon, but did not say when or to what airports. One possible alternative could be additional screening at boarding gates, but "the logistics are very complicated", the source added.

Homeland Security said in a statement Wednesday that the restriction was under consideration.

The U.S. laptop ban has affected direct flights to the United States by Royal Jordanian Airlines, Egypt Air, Turkish Airlines, Saudi Arabian Airlines, Kuwait Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Qatar Airways, Emirates and Etihad Airways.

Emirates, one of the several airlines whose United States flights are affected, have cited the electronics ban as a factor behind its decision to cut underperforming flights to the country.
