You Can't Get The Netflix App On A Rooted Android Phone Anymore

If/when it transpires that the Netflix app stops working on rooted/unlocked Android phones as well as the app not being available via the Play store, we will update this story accordingly.

For those who don't know, Widevine is a Google company that provides multiplatform content protection to internet video delivery services.

Because of this, the app won't show up for rooted users when they search for it on the Google Play store.

There are plenty of good reasons to root your Android phone or tablet, from removing pre-installed bloatware to speeding up your device, but Netflix just made the decision a bit more hard.

While Netflix confirms of blocking devices, the goal of that action is still not clear. As we're now finding out, a rooted Android device does not meet the criteria necessary, simply because it does open up the possibility to piracy. It really depends on what you would like to have more on your mobile device though.

Central African Republic violence 'highly worrying,' UN says
The UN agency said that DR Congo, which is also rife with violence, as of end March was hosting 103,000 Central African refugees. Cardinal Dieudonne Nzapalainga of Bangui led negotiations with the Christian rebels to stop the violence.

Netflix recently released version 5.0 on the Play Store.

Power users own the majority of rooted devices.

Root on Android is used for many things, not just piracy and wrongdoing. Oddly the app still seems to work if sideloaded, but it's not clear it's going to stay that way. These companies want to make sure that their contents are well-protected. Whether this will result in fewer subscriptions, or a change in Netflix's decision, remains to be seen. SafetyNet is an API that checks whether the bootloader on a device is locked; AndroidPay is disabled on devices with unlocked bootloaders regardless of whether those devices are rooted or not.

Google does not approve of this and Netflix does not want to be on the wrong side with Google. After all, Netflix can also be accessed via other kinds of platforms if it is not too high on your priority list as opposed to using a rooted Android smartphone.
