AT&T strike may close retail stores this weekend

More than 35,000 AT&T workers began a weekend-long strike on Friday after their union accused the company of failing to make a fair proposal during contract negotiations.

Full disclosure: In These Times staff are members of the Communication Workers of America, and the union is a sponsor of the magazine. CWA represents about 150,000 of them.

Workers are also frustrated that they are being asked to pay more of their health-insurance costs, he added, and that changes in retail workers' commissions have limited or reduced their take-home pay. The CWA alleges AT&T has cut 12,000 call center jobs in the United States since 2011, opting instead to contract with third-party companies in other countries.

The company and the union have held contract negotiations for almost four months of bargaining, according to the statement, which said workers are fighting for wage increases to cover rising healthcare costs, basic job security, affordable healthcare, and a fair scheduling policy. The wireline and DirecTV workers have been without a new contract for over a year and held a one-day strike in March. "It's now in AT&T's hands to stand with workers", said Trainor.

In an era when immigrant scapegoating has become even more widespread with the election of Donald Trump to the White House, the union's report is refreshing in highlighting the struggles of workers across AT&T's global footprint who are engaged in their own battles for union representation and a living wage.

Finally Gayle showed some pwer hitting shots to score 48 off 28 balls; Kohli was also back in form scoring 58 off 45 balls. The bowlers brilliantly to defend 161 run on a pitch that was on the slower side.

It isn't the first strike at AT&T.

Another key issue is job security protections.

Given the current controversy surrounding the administration, it's possible that Trump will keep his distance.

AT&T workers are on strike across the country, including in Berks County. Former President George W. Bush invoked Taft-Hartley against the West Coast longshore union in 2002.

AT&T customers could find it hard to obtain help this weekend if something were to happen to their DirecTV, U-Verse, or AT&T wireless service, as AT&T union workers walked off the job today following failed contract negotiations.
