Macron wins French presidency, promises more lawmakers new to politics

French President-elect Emmanuel Macron has appeared by the side of the man he is succeeding as the country commemorates the end of the Second World War. Macron has promised that half of those candidates will be new to elected politics, as he was before his victory Sunday. He clinched 18 percent of the vote in the 2002 presidential elections - the first time that National Front made it to the final round.

Pro-Europe centrist Macron, 39, was elected on Sunday after promising a "revolution" that would bring in fresh faces into France's stale political life and end the pattern of power alternating between traditional parties.

Freshly elected to the French presidency, Emmanuel Macron now faces an equally hard Act II: securing the parliamentary majority he needs to make good on his campaign promises to lift France out of economic gloom.

On Monday, a French national holiday, the president-elect joined President Francois Hollande in commemoration of the end of World War II.

Ajax into Europa League final
Dolberg had scored in the first leg last week and is making a name for himself, having also netted 15 league goals this season. Following the win, four-time European champions Ajax will meet Manchester United in the May 24 final in Stockholm.

Monday also marked decades of peace in Western Europe, something Macron highlighted in his campaign against Le Pen. Sylvie Goulard, a French deputy to the European Parliament, said Macron would make Berlin his first official visit, with perhaps a stop to see French troops stationed overseas as well.

Among the approximately 450 candidates set to be announced on Thursday will be a number of familiar political faces from the Socialist party and from the centrist party Modem, headed by Macron ally Francois Bayrou. Macron also resigned as its president, as he takes on his new role as president of the republic. In interviews on Monday her campaign director David Rachline said the party founded by her father would get a new name as bait to pull in a broader spectrum of supporters in France.

Le Pen says the 10.6 million votes she won on Sunday will make her party the leading opposition.

Republicans vice-president Laurent Wauquiez emphasised Macron's vulnerability, noting he had been a grudging choice of president for many voters, who backed him only to block Le Pen.

Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, the president of the Conference of European Rabbis, said in a statement that while Macron's election is "extremely encouraging", his group is "concerned that a third of the French population voted for a unsafe political leader".
