"Overall, cities in the South continue to grow at a faster rate than any other USA region", said Amel Toukabri, a demographer in the Census Bureau's population division.

U.S. Census estimates for 2016 released Thursday show Charleston's population has dipped to 49,138 - down nearly 600 people from 2015's population estimate of 49,736. In the past six years the rate in large US cities slowed from 1.1 percent in 2010 to 0.82 percent; in the suburbs over the same period, growth declined from 0.95 percent to 0.89 percent. "The fact that the state of IL is leading the nation in population loss and the loss of college students is a direct result of a lack of leadership by Governor Rauner and the instability he has created".

The estimates for cities, villages and towns, "start with county population, then they distribute that over lower levels of geographies using estimates of housing units", said Jan Vink, a researcher with Cornell University's Program on Applied Demographics, an affiliate of the Federal-State Cooperative on Population Estimates.

Six of the 15 fastest growing cities are in Texas, two are in Florida, and one each in SC and Tennessee. The city has about 200 acres of developable land left, and has long predicted the population will top out at about 23,000. He also said capital improvements, including the Civic Center renovation project, will draw people to the city. It marks the third consecutive year the city has lost residents.

"I don't think it's an apple to apple comparison", said Dr. Yang Yang, a professor at Temple's School of Sports, Tourism and Hospitality management.

Logan's population was estimated at 50,676, marking the first time it had surpassed 50,000, according to the bureau. About 89,547 residents left Chicago and its surrounding suburbs for other states in 2016, a number that couldn't be offset by new residents and births, according to an analysis of census data released in March.

Birmingham city is now estimated to be home to 212,157 residents.

Of the 68 cities and townships in the country with more than 300,000 residents, Portland's 1.47 percent growth rate was ranked 17th from 2015-16.

Four cities in the West - Bend, Oregon; Buckeye, Arizona; Lehi, Utah; and Meridian, Idaho - were among the top 15 fastest growing. Midwest small towns declined by.3 percent on average since 2015. But several local cities showed percentage drops, including Cedarville (-1 percent), Greenville and Sidney (-.8 percent), Oakwood (-.4 percent) and Kettering (-.3 percent).

McCracken County's 2016 population estimate is 65,162, also an increase from the previous year's total of 64,973.
