Jorge Sampaoli announced he is poised to leave Sevilla and become Argentina manager

A statement from Sevilla read: "Sevilla and the Argentina Football Association (AFA) have reached a preliminary agreement for coach Jorge Sampaoli to separate from the Nervion club in order to become the Argentina national team coach".

Sampoli is leaving the Spanish club a year before his contract expires.

"All parties are satisfied with the agreement reached".

"This agreement in principle is pending the drafting and presentation of the pertinent documents, which must be signed by the parties next Thursday, June 1".

Right now Argentina is fifth with 22 points behind Brasil (33), Colombia (24), Uruguay (23) and Chile (23).

"In the conversations between Sevilla and the AFA, who served as representatives of Jorge Sampaoli, the fixed amount for the termination of the coach's contract was not discussed at any time".

The former Chile boss described leading Argentina as his "dream" job and told reporters after last weekend's final match of the campaign, a 5-0 win over Osasuna, that the AFA needed to resolve his contract situation with Sevilla.

The former Chile coach was offered the job last August shortly after taking the helm of Sevilla but made a decision to remain in charge of the club. Documents that must be signed by both parties next Thursday, June 1st.

Argentine FA President Claudio Tapia said last month that Sampaoli was the only candidate to succeed Edgardo Bauza who was sacked in April after eight games in charge.

Argentina are now fifth in the 10-team South America zone World Cup qualifying standings with four games remaining.

In his sole season in charge of Sevilla, the Andalusian club secured a fourth place finish in La Liga and ensured they will have a place in the Champions League qualifying rounds in August.
