Cure for WannaCry found

After encrypting files, the WannaCry worm demanded a payment of £230 ($300) in bitcoins before they were unfrozen. However, its market share is not much higher than 50%, so the fact that most victims were using this operating system, while the other 50% of users, although divided in other versions, has not been affected.

Microsoft had released a patch for Windows 7 in March but it appears that many users hadn't updated to the latest version.

Researchers have identified hundreds of WannaCry ransomware samples in the wild, malware responsible for debilitating attacks on health services and companies last week.

"Some organisations just aren't aware of the risks; some don't want to risk interrupting important business processes; sometimes they are short-staffed", said Ziv Mador, vice president of security research at Trustwave's Israeli SpiderLabs unit. It stated, "WannaCrypt exploits used in the attack were drawn from the exploits stolen from the National Security Agency, or NSA, in the United States".

A week after the WannaCry outbreak, analytics have revealed that, despite Windows XP grabbing the headlines due to its use in the NHS and other institutions, it was Windows 7 that was the worst affected by the ransomware.

According to the FT, the cost of updating older Windows versions "went from $200 per device in 2014, when regular support for XP ended, to $400 the following year", while some clients were asked to pay heftier fees. Over the weekend the malware creators have made over $32,000 from organizations that paid the ransom in order to regain access to their files.

Currently, the only right approach in case of a WannaCry infection that has been found effective is system reinstallment at the expense of encrypted file, Kaspersky said.

The WannaCry attack provides another in a long series of "red flags".

Guinet's work was advanced by internationally acclaimed ethical hacker Benjamin Delpy who exploited the shortcomings of WannaCry and used it to create a tool called WanaKiwi that produces a decryption key for Windows XP, 7, 2003, 2008 and possibly Vista.

Also, Signal Alliance, a Microsoft enterprise partner has issued a WannaCry ransomware advisory to its clients and key users of Windows applications across the country.

American software giant Microsoft held back from distributing a free security update that could have protected computers from the WannaCry global cyber attack, the Financial Times reported Thursday.
