Merkel: Europe must stay united in face of ally uncertainty

Angela Merkel arrives for a G7 family

Speaking at a campaign event held in a Bavarian beer tent, the German Chancellor emphasised the need for friendly relations with the US, Britain and Russian Federation, but added: "We Europeans must really take our destiny into our own hands".

"We Europeans must really take our fate into our own hands", Merkel said, while also stressing the importance of maintaining friendly relations with the two nations, as well as other countries, "even with Russian Federation".

G7 leaders went on to blame the USA for the failure to reach an agreement on climate change, in an unusually frank statement which read: "The United States of America is in the process of reviewing its policies on climate change and on the Paris Agreement and thus is not in a position to join the consensus on these topics".

"The era in which we could fully rely on others is over to some extent", Merkel said, before adding, "That's what I experienced over the past several days".

"I experienced that in the last a few days, and therefore I can only say that we Europeans must really take our fate into our own hands, of course in friendship with the United States and in friendship with Great Britain and as good neighbors wherever it is possible, also with Russian Federation and also with all the other countries".

Real survive early Atletico onslaught to reach final
Simeone was loudly cheered. "He has also been a long-term player and sometimes it is important to feel what the player thinks". It was the final European game at the Calderon before Atletico moves into a new venue next season.

Merkel also emphasized the continued need for friendly relations with the USA and others. While the public is more familiar with the "special relationship" between Britain and the United States, the German-U.S. relationship has arguably been more important.

Though she did not mention them by name, Merkel was most likely referring to the fractured relationship Germany now shares with the U.S., as well as with the United Kingdom post-Brexit. Saudi investment in US arms and cooperation on terrorism seem to have led to a change of heart, and he was more comfortable with King Salman and other Arab leaders like Egypt's el-Sisi than with the likes of Angela Merkel later in the trip. "She's not looking to push Britain or the U.S. away - she is looking to strengthen Europe". "Trump accelerates it, but it was to be expected".

Merkel's comments were similar to some she made shortly after Trump's November election.

During a speech Monday in Berlin, Merkel did not specifically mention Trump but quoted a 1963 speech by former President John F. Kennedy in Frankfurt, where he told the audience "those who look only to the past or the present are certain to miss the future". "But anyone who puts on national blinkers and has no view of the world around him will ultimately get lost".

Mrs Merkel's latest comments are partly a move to appeal to German voters first and foremost, the BBC's Europe editor Katya Adler says. "And above all else, we must not submit to Trump's arms-race logic".
