Cleveland fires 1 officer, suspends 2nd in Rice shooting

Cleveland police suspended the officer who was with Loehmann at the time, but Loehmann's firing came as the result of offenses unrelated to Rice's death, ABC News and the New York Times reported.

The city of Cleveland has fired one police officer and suspended a second involved in the shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice.

Tamir Rice's mother says she's relieved that the officer who fatally shot her 12-year-old son has been fired, but she also thinks the officer who drove the patrol vehicle that day should also be fired. The officers weren't charged criminally, but Tamir's mother settled a federal civil rights lawsuit with the city for $6 million.

"Soon afterward, police drove onto the grass within feet of 12-year-old Tamir".

The police union representing the officers planned a news conference later Tuesday. "Those officers acted appropriately and within the guidelines they had to work with".

Loehmann was sacked because he wasn't truthful on his job application, Williams said. "It makes it even more challenging and more hard in terms of accepting it if it happens at the hands of a police officer".

China claims nearly the entire South China Sea , a key shipping lane that is believed to be rich in marine and mineral resources.

Records made public by another police department where Mr Loehmann worked prior to joining the Cleveland force, showed that supervisors there had wanted to fire him for emotional instability.

A discipline letter against Garmback has cited him for driving too close to Rice. "We still need accountability".

In 2015, a little more than a year after the shooting, a grand jury also declined to bring criminal charges against the two officers. Williams said the department now makes sure to read through all applicants' personnel files and employment history.

Earlier this year, the 911 operator who took the call about Tamir was suspended for eight days for failing to tell the radio dispatcher that the caller had said Tamir could be a juvenile and the gun might be fake.

Along with the suspension, Garmback will be required to attend additional tactical training.
