Andrew Weaver welcomes Clark's 'willingness to work across party lines'

While Clark agreed she would likely lose a confidence vote in the legislature, the current Premier expressed her duty under constitutional convention to face a vote, and if she lost, said she would resign as premier and remain as leader of the opposition. With the Greens opting to back John Horgan's NDPs, the Greens' three seats, along with the NDP's 41, will put the new best friends in the driver's seat with 44 seats, one more than the Liberals.

In an address late Tuesday after Weaver's Greens and John Horgan's New Democrats formalized an alliance in a bid to form government, Weaver blasted Notley for her insistence that British Columbia could do nothing to stop the development of Kinder Morgan's Trans Mountain expansion, which B.C.'s Green Party vehemently opposes.

"We can have a stable minority government for four years with the support of B.C. Green MLAs on confidence and supply matters", said Andrew Weaver, leader of the B.C. Greens".

Judith Guichon. Ultimately, Clark said, it would be up to the lieutenant-governor to decide whether the NDP gets the green light or whether a new election is called.

Reactions are mixed: many activists keen on protecting BC's coast from oil spills and expansion of fish farms, and on stopping the Site C dam and slowing the fracking and LNG activities in BC, are over the moon because they see a Green-NDP collaboration as the only way to accomplish those goals. "This is a unique opportunity for us all".

The Greens ran on a campaign to double the tax on foreign buyers to 30 percent and extend it beyond the Vancouver region to across the province, but Horgan said the parties "disagreed" on that.

But without the support of a majority in the legislature, a B.C. Liberal government would not likely survive its first confidence vote.

"Then we got forestry, and then from forestry, once you've got the forests off, then you get the agriculture built up". It won't help the hundreds of thousands of kids like mine who were part of the generation who went through school under B.C. Liberal governments, but it bodes well for present and future students.

The two parties will move to ban corporate and union donations, and limit individual contributions.

"We can probably guarantee that [the Speech from the Throne] - and [Clark] even said that - that it's not going to be passed in the house", said Conroy.

"We were always of the opinion ... that the greatest degree of commonality lay with the NDP", Chaddock-Costello said.

In an emailed statement, Clark said that it was crucial the B.C. residents see "the specific details of the agreement announced today" by Horgan and Weaver.

"We are optimistic that the value of our communities, our people and the work that we do will be understood and appreciated by our government and that informed and collaborative conversations will take place", she said. "I will consult on those steps with the newly elected BC Liberal caucus, and have more to say tomorrow".

The provincial Liberals are not related to the federal Liberal Party, which is led by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. While the Greens have pledged support over four years to the NDP to maintain a government and pass budgets, they plan to vote independently.
