'Pirates of the Caribbean' tops box office, 'Baywatch' sinks

The overall Memorial Day weekend estimate of $176 million is the lowest since 1999.

The final Pirates of the Caribbean film made $77m in the United States during its first four days, according to Variety.

Yes, doom comes to the Memorial Day box office more times than Jason Voorhees goes to Camp Crystal Lake.

Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales provided media outlets plenty of sea inspired headlines when it sailed into first place at the box office this weekend. Surprisingly enough I seem to have been pretty much on point a month ago with my box office predictions for Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Asia stocks firm as upbeat US, European data boosts confidence
About 6.89 billion shares changed hands in USA exchanges, compared with the 6.72 billion daily average over the last 20 sessions. The greenback fell to seven-month troughs against the euro and Swiss franc, while sliding to a two-week bottom versus the yen.

The debut of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales lifted The Walt Disney Studios past the $1 billion mark at the domestic box office on Friday, May 26, the first studio to do so in 2017.

Of course, the franchise was an unknown quantity then, with many uncertain how a theme park attraction would translate into a big-budget action film. Can anyone other than Johnny Depp play Jack Sparrow? Last year, with "X-Men: Apocalypse" in the No. 1 slot, the box office came in at more than $205 million, while it was almost $195 million in 2015. The rebooted property should land a three-day total of $18.1 million from 3,647 locations and end the four-day holiday weekend with $22 million. It has now surpassed the domestic, foreign, and worldwide totals of the original, which topped out at $773.3 million in 2014. It even raked in less money than the weeks-old Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 which added $25.1 million to its treasure chest.

Warner Bros.' teen romance "Everything, Everything" finished fifth with an estimated 6.18 million US dollars in North America in its second weekend.

Another notable film was Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant, which made $13.2 million over the long weekend in the U.S., dropping substantially from its opening-weekend take of $36.2 million. With a current domestic total of $57.3 million, it doesn't look like Covenant will end its domestic run in theaters anywhere near Prometheus' $126.5 million gross, and won't likely eclipse Aliens or even Alien Vs. Predator $85.2 million and $80.3 million domestic totals. The Goldie Hawn/Amy Schumer comedy Snatched fell from fourth to seventh, but more importantly pulled in $3 million less than it did last week.
