Phil Mickelson announced Saturday he'll pass up a chance to complete the career Grand Slam at the 2017 U.S. Open to attend his daughter's graduation from high school in mid-June.

The ceremony will be held in southern California during the U.S. Open first round at Erin Hills in Wisconsin on June 15.

Phil Mickelson is putting family first as he opts to skip the only major he's never won for daughter's graduation. I didn't want the USGA (US Golf Association) to be caught off guard and I wanted the alternate to know he will most likely be in.

"Unfortunately it comes on the Thursday of the Open, around 10 in the morning pacific time and there's no way I can make it no matter what the tee time is".

Despite failing to win the US Open, five-time major victor Mickelson has finished second or been tied for second on six occasions.

"Mike and I both agree there's no sense in [officially withdrawing] right now". Something might come up with the commencement, the weather, something unforeseen, but it doesn't look very good. "But this is one of those moments where you look back on life and you just don't want to miss it".

Mickelson landed his first major at the 2004 Masters and collected two more Green Jackets in 2006 and 2010 in addition to winning the PGA Championship in 2005.

Mickelson said Amanda will be attending Brown University ("She's a smart little s--", he said). You just need to be there.

Mickelson has not missed the U.S. Open since his first full season as a pro in 1993.

With his wife, Amy, due any day, Mickelson competed in the 1999 U.S. Open at Pinehurst and contended he with would leave the tournament if she went into labor with Amanda.
