The Conservatives are likely to lose about 20 seats, leaving the party without an overall majority and ruining May's plan to increase her numbers in order to empower her to push through her Brexit plan and get the "best deal possible", the projection by opinion pollsters YouGov for The Times suggested.

If the poll is accurate and the swing were uniform across the country, the Tories would be 17 seats short of an overall majority.

If the results of this latest YouGov analysis were to be played out on election night, it could well lead to many of Theresa May's Conservative colleagues calling for her resignation even if the Tories do manage to win the most seats.

The dollar fell to two-week lows against the safe-haven yen as investors turned cautious amid political worries in Europe as well as weaker stock and commodity markets after a long U.S. holiday weekend.

"The difference in the polls in this election is easy to understand - it is nearly wholly to do with how pollsters treat turnout", YouGov pollster Anthony Wells said in a blog post.

However, a new YouGov poll on Wednesday showed a reverse in sentiment, and the Conservatives are now projected to lose as much as 16 seats.

Then came the complete mess that was the party's social care policy which managed to outrage older voters, the very people who traditionally turn out to vote Conservative.

The other party leaders lambasted May for not taking part in the 90 minute discussion.

In a hectic campaign which was suspended after the Manchester bombing last week, pollsters, who universally got it wrong before the last vote in 2015, have offered a vast range for the result of the election: From May losing her majority to a landslide victory for her Conservatives of more than 100 seats. YouGov's election model was based on voting intention figures which gave May a lead of just 3 percentage points, YouGov said.

The Tories now show 42 percent support, with Labour close behind at 39.

The pollster said the approach was used during the European Union referendum and consistently showed voters backed Leave.

YouGov's polling has tended to show a narrower lead for the Conservatives than rival surveys.

"Corbyn is selling a wonderland", The Sun said.

Mrs May's decision not to appear on Wednesday evening's leaders' debate is unlikely to be popular with voters, with Home Secretary Amber Rudd representing the Conservatives in the Prime Minister's absence.

May had ruled out any face-to-face debates during the campaign and Corbyn had followed suit, before changing his stance.

But she hit back saying the electorate had to choose between May's "strong and stable" leadership or a "coalition of chaos" led by Corbyn and formed with the other parties at the debate.
