The Latest WH says Trump won't block Comey testimony

President Donald Trump will not attempt to stop former FBI Director James Comey from testifying in a public hearing Thursday by asserting executive privilege, the White House said Monday.

But she said Trump wanted to allow for a "swift and thorough examination of the facts" related to Comey's ouster and the multiple investigations into his campaign's possible ties to Russian Federation.

Senators will nearly certainly ask Comey whether Trump asked him to drop an Federal Bureau of Investigation probe into Flynn's contacts with Russian government officials.

Comey is scheduled to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee at an open hearing on Thursday.

Former FBI director James Comey is scheduled to testify on Capitol Hill later this week.

This kind of an order or request can be interpreted by authorities as obstruction of justice which could have carried repercussions for Trump, especially as he sacked Comey thereafter.

Trump told NBC News he fired Comey in part because of the "Russia thing", which he called a "made-up story".

Burr, a North Carolina Republican who last spoke to Comey on Saturday, said Comey will be free to discuss his interactions with President Donald Trump and the investigation into Russian election interference, and that he was cleared to do so by special counsel Robert Mueller III.

If Comey's testimony confirms several anonymously sourced reports that have appeared in the press since his firing - for instance, a report that Trump asked Comey to drop the FBI investigation into fired National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, and that Comey wrote a memo documenting this - it could be very damaging for the president.

Comey is said to have written detailed notes about three conversations he had with Trump while still Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Friday the decision by the White House counsel's office hasn't been made yet.

The online news outlet said the NSA report depicted a hacking operation tied closely to Moscow's GRU intelligence directorate that targeted private U.S. companies providing voter registration services and equipment to local governments around the country.
