Team New Zealand capsizes in America's Cup challenger race

Emirates Team New Zealands campaign has suffered a significant setback after their boat capsized in race two against Land Rover BAR in the Louis Vuitton Americas Cup Challenger Play-offs.

The Portsmouth-based team broke part of their wing during the first of their semi finals.

New Zealand, trying to book a return to the America's Cup Match after a heartbreaking loss to Oracle Team USA in San Francisco four years ago, had looked solid in building a 2-0 lead over the Brits with two wins on Monday (June 5).

The semi-final winners will go head-to-head to decide who gets to challenge holders Team USA for the America's Cup itself, starting on June 17.

At a press conference Ainslie added: "I am sure they will recover from that and be out racing tomorrow or the next day".

As a result, Peter Burling's team only had to cross the start line in the scheduled third race of the afternoon to clinch victory, which they duly did, taking a two-point advantage over the British team in the process.

The team has a spare wing which it is allowed to use under the America's Cup rules.

Shourav Dasari , a past victor of both minor-league bees, was described as the consensus favorite as the ESPN broadcast began. It had added a tiebreaker test, but it did not come into play. "It motivates me", she said.

Glenn Ashby is leading Team New Zealand in the America's Cup.

In the other semi-final Softbank Team Japan beat Sweden's Artemis racing in both their encounters.

The British led by about three boat lengths over the start-line and held their advantage until the fourth mark, where they rounded wide and NZ helmsman Peter Burling chose a much tighter line, heading upwind with greater momentum to grab the lead.

The Kiwis had only to start the second race to pocket the point and they're happy to resume racing against the British tomorrow two up in the first-to-five series. In 2013, he helped Oracle Team USA rebound from an 8-1 deficit to Team New Zealand by winning eight straight races to retain the oldest trophy in global sports.

"Right now, the guys have obviously taken the boat out [of the water] and are assessing the damage, of which we have quite a bit, but we feel like we'll be able to fix it and get back into action". I guess myself as a wing trimmer them having a wing issue is never a pleasant thing. A damaged wingsail in race one forced the British team to retire in their opening race against Emirates Team New Zealand.

However, that pressure intensified right from the start of the race as Barker won the duel in the pre-start sequence to give his team the early advantage.

"We are obviously thrilled with the day, that was pretty full on by anyone's standards", said Dean Barker on his SoftBank Team Japan's efforts on a victorious day.
