Who Will Be President? Election If Needed On July 17

Counting would take place on July 20. President Pranab Mukherjee's term expires in July.

As per the schedule, June 28 is the last day for nominations, while a candidate can withdraw from the electoral battle till July 1. The scrutiny of nominations for the polls will take place on June 29, 2017.

Elected members of state legislatives and parliament will be eligible to vote for the new president, who will assume office next month. Mukherjee assumed the office of President in July 2012.

At the moment, there are 13 vacancies in the electoral college, which includes three MPs and 10 MLAs.

If needed, the Presidential election will be held on July 17 and results will be announced three days later, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Nasim Zaidi announced on Wednesday.

The Election Commission will conduct the vote through ballot papers and declare the result on July 20. Zaidi further talked about the details of the election and said that the Secretary General of Lok Sabha will be the Returning Officer for the election.

The MPs and MLAs will have to cast their votes on ballot papers using the pens provided by the EC.

The Congress and other opposition parties have said that they would like to have consensus with the ruling party over the name of the presidential candidate.
