After Mr Trump's remarks, the Pentagon reiterated its position that Qatar was a key United States military partner, saying "the evolving situation is hindering our ability to plan for longer-term military operations".

Iran, a close ally of Qatar, blamed the developments on U.S. President Donald Trump who recently visited the Middle East.

But the states did not respond to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson's warning of humanitarian consequences.

He said the blockade was "impairing United States and other global business activities in the region" and that the USA backed mediation efforts being pursued by Kuwait.

UAE ambassador to the US Yousef al-Otaiba praised Mr Trump's leadership in the face of Qatar's "troubling support for extremism". Many Qataris also live in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and UAE.

Hamas expressed shock on Wednesday over Saudi Arabia's demand that Qatar end its support.

Several other Muslim nations also downgraded their diplomatic ties with Qatar.

Donald Trump backed Riyadh and Abu Dhabi's decision to isolate Qatar while the USA secretaries of defence and state sought to calm the situation among its closest Arab partners, all of whom play a key role in U.S. counterterrorism and security policies in the region.

"We, as a matter of policy, do not interfere with either home affairs of other countries or with their bilateral relations", Lavrov said. "But it does not give us joy when relations between our partners deteriorate", Mr Lavrov said.

He said: "The emir of Qatar has made progress in halting financial support and expelling terrorist elements from his country, but he must do more and he must do it more quickly".

Turkey, like Qatar, has supported the Muslim Brotherhood, which led an elected government in Egypt in 2013 but was ousted from power by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
