"It's important that you keep your best players, and important you're able to keep a core together and give yourself the best possible opportunity of reaching the club's ambition, which is to go back to the Premier League".

Middlesbrough have confirmed Garry Monk has been appointed as their new manager.

"This club ticks all the right boxes for me".

The Dutchman's strong first season caught the attention of new Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani who is now looking to replace Garry Monk after he recently left the club to join Middlesbrough.

Monk says the "clarity" of the set-up at Middlesbrough appealed to him and believes they're equipped to win promotion straight back to the Premier League.

He left Elland Road last month after failing to agree a deal with the club's new owner.

Monk has not ruled out singing new players. The 44-year-old's work has not gone unnoticed and his name has been linked to the Leeds job since Monk's departure at the end of the last campaign.

The 38-year-old was expected to extend his stay with the Yorkshire club, but talks with owner Andrea Radrizzani broke down after the Italian completed his full takeover.

Hull have appointed former Russian Federation boss Leonid Slutsky as their new head coach. I'm ambitious and want to be working and find that challenge, and all of those ticked boxes that I needed to go forward were with Middlesbrough.

There has also been plenty of speculation surrounding the future of captain Ben Gibson - who is now on global duty with England - with several Premier League clubs reportedly interested in the central defender.

"It was a really good time for me at the club and I thought it would carry on", he said.

Monk will get on with appointing his backroom staff, with James Beattie likely to join from Leeds.
