Hawaii Rebuffs Trump, Adopts Paris Agreement Goals Anyway

When the USA actually completes to process of pulling out from the Paris agreement, which would take years, it would join Nicaragua - who thought the accord didn't go far enough in combating climate change - and Syria - who didn't want to be beholden to other governments - as the only holdouts.

In yet another instance of a world leader trolling President Donald Trump, North Korea issued a statement on Tuesday slamming the United States for pulling out of the Paris climate agreement, calling it "the height of egoism".

David Ige signed two bills yesterday (June 6) to enforce parts of the Paris Agreement-making Hawaii the first state to take concrete action in support of the worldwide climate agreement. "In order for Hawaii to be an active participant in going green and looking at alternative energies", Okabe said, "we want to be the first, and we want to be the trendsetter for the world".

Along with setting climate change as a priority for the state, the bill creates a state commission dedicated to studying climate change and putting out detailed plans for responding both to sea-level rise and climate change as a whole, with the stipulation that the plans align with the Paris agreement. "Tides are getting higher, biodiversity is shrinking, coral is bleaching, coastlines are eroding, weather is becoming more extreme".

"Together, we can directly contribute to the global agenda of achieving a more resilient and sustainable island Earth", Ige said. It establishes the Carbon Farming Task Force, which would look at agricultural and aquacultural practices that would improve soil health and aid in carbon capture technology.

Turkey says Qatar deployment aims to ensure security
UAE ambassador to the US Yousef al-Otaiba praised Mr Trump's leadership in the face of Qatar's "troubling support for extremism". But the states did not respond to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson's warning of humanitarian consequences.

Sen. J. Kalani English (D), who introduced SB 559, recognized it as a "legal basis to continue adaption and mitigation strategies" for the state, "despite the federal government's withdrawal from the treaty", according to ABC News.

North Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson joined a chorus of global leaders in expressing concern over Trump's decision to pull the USA from the climate-change agreement, calling it "short-sighted and silly".

In the op-ed, the mayors address Pittsburgh's history as an industrial and polluted city continuing to make stride toward cleaning up its air.

Trump had said: "Even if the Paris Agreement were implemented in full-with total compliance from all nations-it is estimated it would only produce a two-tenths of one degree Celsius reduction in global temperature by the year 2100".
