Northam beats Perriello in Democratic primary for Governor

The dichotomy evoked comparisons to the 2016 Democratic presidential primary between the upstart Sanders and the establishment Hillary Clinton.

The race caused an election night stir as Gillespie came within just a few thousand votes, a less than 1 percent margin of topping the well-known incumbent.

Northam, a usually low-key pediatric neurologist, won running as a pragmatist with the state Democratic establishment's firm support.

Virginia's gubernatorial contest has received widespread national attention as the swing state is one of only two states electing new governors this year.

"We want you to be part of our effort", Gillespie said, adding that Virginia can not afford another four years with a Democrat as governor. "I think we have seen a lot of folks moving towards the left", says Fury. A long-time player in state politics, he is backed by the state party's elite, including sitting governor Terry McAuliffe and senator Tim Kaine.

Perriello made a surprise entrance into the race in January and faced an uphill climb from the beginning.

By far, the most closely watched races will be between the five candidates running to be Virginia's next governor.

Southwest Virginia voters appear to have chosen individuals who didn't ultimately win the winning nominations in the gubernatorial primaries.

No reason to be alarmed. "It's even more important that we work together with our allies and our friends and our partners". May's government, however, on Tuesday dismissed Khan's call for the visit to be canceled.

Northam essentially had been campaigning for years, making key contacts with influential power brokers like prominent African-American politicians and religious leaders, and building up a large cash advantage that let him outspend Perriello on TV advertising in the closing weeks of the race. Northam was expected to cruise in as the party's only choice, but after Trump's election, Perriello threw his hat into the ring, arguing that bolder leadership was needed to be push back against Trump-style politics.

Associated Press reporters Ben Finley in Norfolk and Alanna Durkin Richer in Richmond contributed to this report.

All across Virginia, voters are heading to the polls for the state's primary election.

The Democratic candidates for lieutenant governor are former federal prosecutors Justin E. Fairfax and Gene J. Rossi and political consultants Susan S. Platt, all of Northern Virginia.

And capitalizing on the recent trend where insider status isn't a desirable label in GOP primaries, Stewart has tried to turn Gillespie's stellar resume - former RNC chairman, former adviser to President George W. Bush, near-successful 2014 Senate nominee - against him. That level of enthusiasm bodes well for the Democrats in Virginia to hold on to the governorship.

The race for governor in Virginia might expose the Democrats' playbook, as Tom Perriello and Ralph Northam face off against each other in Tuesday's Democratic primary.

The survey demonstrates extraordinary grassroots support for Tom Perriello.

Senator Reeves says he's willing to work with Democrats on issues where they can agree.
