The wrong kind of US Open history: Top 3 all miss cut

The top two ranked players in the world, defending champion Dustin Johnson and 2011 US Open victor Rory McIlroy, also failed to make the cut.

"I showed up for the last six holes at least", joked McIlroy, who was three over par after 12 holes before carding birdies on the fourth, fifth, seventh and ninth.

The 28-year-old started day two with a one-shot cushion but a one-over-par 73 opened the door for a four-way tie at the top.

And for all the birdies and blunders at Erin Hills, the most compelling image Friday came from the parking lot, where one star after another left town after missing the cut.

Paul Casey produced a brilliant fightback to remain in contention for a first major title as former champion Rory McIlroy missed the cut in the US Open for the second year running.

Jordan Spieth sits just inside the cut-line at even-par through 16 holes, while playing partner and defending US Open champion Dustin Johnson is flirting with a missed cut at three-over. He was due out at 2:20pm local time, having begun the tournament with a three-over 75.

Nobody should have been shocked to see Casey up there on seven-under, alongside another Englishman in Tommy Fleetwood, who shot a 70, and the Americans Brian Harman (70) and Brooks Kopeka (70).

But under sunny skies on Thursday, Erin Hills looked more friend than foe with 44 golfers breaking par to set a record for the opening round of a U.S. Open.

Shane Lowry is the only Irish golfer now inside the projected cut mark of 1-over at the US Open as Day 2 unfolds.

Guentzel shines again as Pens surge to Game Two win
Guentzel was also the hero in Game 1 , beating Rinne to break a 3-3 tie with just over three minutes left in regulation. Bonino could not put weight on his left foot as he was helped off the ice when a shot from Predators defenseman P.K.

There were as many amateurs who broke par as players in the top 10 in the world - two each. With one more birdie on the back nine, Matsuyama carded a sparkling seven-under 65, matching Fowler for the low round of the week.

Deepdale's Hagestad misses cut.

"I had been swinging it well and it felt really, really good a couple holes later to be picking the ball out of the hole for a birdie".

Day added a 75 to his first-round 79, which included two triple-bogeys.

An 11-year-old golf course shaped from Wisconsin pastureland was sure to bring something different to the U.S. Open.

"It was a good display, all my own fault, of what can happen if you get out of position on this golf course, which is what I did on 14", Casey said. "I guess it's rare you get through a US Open or any major without some kind of a hiccup".

Casey nearly watched his U.S. Open hopes sink with a triple-bogey eight on the par-five 14th hole, and a bogey on the next that dropped him to two under for the tournament.

McIlroy, who has struggled through a nagging rib injury that has limited him to six tournaments this year, saw some positive signs in the second round after complaining about feeling rusty after his substandard opening 18 holes. He still went out in even-par 36 and was one shot behind Rickie Fowler, who plays in the afternoon.

"The greens were still receptive to good shots, but they were firmer and faster", said Fowler. "Part of that is just age, and part I'll give credit to caddy Johnny McLaren, credit to my wife and my little boy".
