Amnesty urges donors to give more to South Sudan refugees

For the fifth year in a row, the number of people displaced worldwide continued to increase from an already historically high level. While the 2016 total is high - representing an enormous number of people needing protection worldwide - it also shows that growth in displacement slowed a year ago.

However, in 2016, South Sudan became "the biggest new factor" when peace efforts broke down in July resulting in some 737,400 people fleeing by the end of the year.

This makes Pakistan the second country after Turkey to host the largest number of refugees out of which a large number of them comprises of Afghan nationals, BBC reported on Monday.

"The worldwide neglect that you see here is matched nowhere else in the world", Grandi told The Associated Press on Sunday while visiting South Sudan's largest internally displaced camp in the town of Bentiu.

A good reflection of the new thinking is the UN's latest goodwill ambassador to refugees, Yusra Mardini, a young woman who fled Syria in 2015.

However, the total number seeking safety across worldwide borders as refugees topped 22.5 million, the highest number seen since UNHCR was founded in 1950.

A crowd of displaced people look on as members of the United Nations multi-national police contingent provide security during a visit of UNCHR High Commissioner Filippo Grandi to South Sudan's largest camp for the internally-displaced, in.

While 10.3 million people fled past year, almost 7.2 million refugees and internally displaced people returned home or started new lives under long-term resettlement programmes in Western countries.

Garry Monk named as new Middlesbrough manager
Middlesbrough have confirmed Garry Monk has been appointed as their new manager. "This club ticks all the right boxes for me". Monk will get on with appointing his backroom staff, with James Beattie likely to join from Leeds.

Uganda received 532,725 new refugees a year ago, and was the country receiving the largest number of refugees worldwide.

The UN refugee chief also voiced alarm over the rapidly deteriorating situation in South Sudan, which he said was now the world's "fastest growing refugee crisis and displacement crisis". Syria, Iraq, and the still very significant displacement inside Colombia were the biggest internal displacement situations, nonetheless the problem of internal displacement is a worldwide one and accounts for nearly two thirds of the global forced displacement total.

He expressed hope that this report will provide an opportunity to the rich countries to rethink to host the refugees. "If we fail, we will be faced with a more unstable world, where the alarming high displacement figures will only continue to increase", said Egeland.

Also in 2016, the total number of people seeking asylum globally was 2.8 million, about 400,000 fewer than in 2015.

"About 2,000 people crossed the border from South Sudan into Uganda each day over the last twelve months". Significant numbers of refugees in Uganda also came from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (205,400), Burundi (41,000), Somalia (30,700), and Rwanda (15,200). The total number represents the enormous population in need of protection by global agencies and states, according to the UNHCR.

"Although these figures represent small shifts compared to the previous year. the relatively stable figures mask a very unstable situation", agency chief Filippo Grandi said.

Among the refugees, asylum seekers - people who have fled their country and are seeking global protection - totaled 2.8 million by the end of 2016.

Grandi on Sunday visited South Sudan's largest camp for internally displaced people in the town of Bentiu.
