Senate health care status: No bill yet

As Affordable Care Act repeal teeters, prospects for bipartisanship build

While the party's liberal wing is demanding that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY and his team shut the Senate down, Schumer has made no decision and often tries to forge consensus in his caucus before executing party strategy.

Activists like Neiman say Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has put them in a bind. The bill is shaping up to have a similar structure as the House's bill, while more reflecting the principles of centrist Republicans in both chambers.

Pressed on the lack of committee hearings or input by a reporter, he described the Senate GOP working group as "a committee of the whole".

Even if Senate Republicans are successful in getting the bill out for a vote, they still face an uphill battle getting it passed.

The events are set for July 29, what is scheduled to be the first day of the congressional summer recess, and organizers are hoping the "Our Lives on the Line" protests - including a flagship rally in Washington - will set the tone for several weeks of aggressive activism to persuade key lawmakers to back off their repeal efforts.

Republicans will be unable to pass a Senate bill if just three of their party's 52 members vote "no".

"The situation in Nevada shows that chaos and instability in healthcare does not help the Republican case for free market reform - it undermines it", Gingrich said. Write to Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Bob Corker (R-South Carolina), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Rob Portman (R-Ohio), and Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana).

A Senate aide disclosed that Democrats would begin objecting to unanimous-consent requests to slow down proceedings for requests and resolutions, request that the American Health Care Act (AHCA) previously passed in the House be brought to committee, and deliver speeches blasting the GOP health care proposal late every evening, Business Insider reports.

McConnell's office did not respond to a request for comment over his fundraising schedule.

Some moderate GOP senators are trying to extend the phase-out over seven years and ease some of the Medicaid cuts the House bill would make.

"It's an iterative process", Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) told Politico, adding that senators in the room are sending options to the Congressional Budget Office to try to figure out in general how much they would cost.

"Health care is priority No. 1 right now", said Nicole Gill, executive director of Tax March, which organized more than 100 rallies across the country on April 15.

That's not going to happen in the Senate where non-expansion Republicans have argued that Medicaid-expansion states shouldn't be allowed to keep more federal money. Now that the House measure has come to the Senate, Wyden said that McConnell has "committed to rushing the bill to a partisan vote on the floor with no review, no hearings, and no accountability to the American people".

"I think it's being written, uh, by someone somewhere but I'm not aware of who or where", Sen.

The devious Senate GOP leader prefers to operate in the dark, and it's giving Democrats as well as Republicans fits.
