Two tropical storms developing?

A tropical storm warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area within 36 hours.

The National Weather Service says the chance of tropical cyclone development is 80 percent within the next 48 hours for the southern Gulf of Mexico.

Satellite data and surface observations indicated that a broad low-pressure area had formed over the Gulf of Honduras, and the associated precipitation activity was showing signs of organization.

As the system moves from near the Yucatan Peninsula to the Gulf, heavy rain will continue to threaten western Cuba with flooding rain.

A chance for storms will stay with us for much of the week, as we watch the Gulf of Mexico for tropical development. An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft was scheduled to investigate this system later Monday, if necessary. Clouds will hang around but eventually move out by Tuesday morning leaving us with mostly sunny skies. The reason for the low confidence forecast as of now is because of numerous differences in reliable forecast models on where it will eventually track.

Tropical Storm Bret has formed in the Atlantic, but that isn't the storm now brewing that might impact South Carolina's weather. This is likely to be the second tropical storm of the year and would be named Bret.

One of those two systems, the one farther out in the Atlantic, triggered the first-ever "Potential Tropical Cyclone" alert from the hurricane center on Sunday.

While a strong system seems unlikely, the impacts to our area could still be significant given the amount of heavy rain that we have seen over the past few weeks.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs through November 30.

A tropical wave is in the Atlantic Ocean about 1500 miles east-southeast of the southern Windward Islands in the Caribbean, and it's churning out scattered showers and thunderstorms, forecasters said.
