Brazil's attorney general formally accuses Temer

Brazilian President Michel Temer has been formally charged with accepting bribes. The country's attorney general took that step on Monday in the first of what is expected to be a series of formal graft charges against Temer

Attorney General Rodrigo Janot has up to this coming Tuesday to file passive corruption charges against Temer before the Federal Supreme Court (STF).

But Janot's decision to separate the charges, filing them piecemeal, could drag out the crisis and weaken Temer's base, making congressional approval for a trial more likely. He said it could be further compromised if there were more revelations, or any sign that Brazil's economy, which has been showing some faint signs of recovery, is stumbling again.

Brazilian President Michel Temer has been charged with accepting bribes by the country's chief prosecutor, a media report said. Temer is expressing defiance in the face of possible corruption charges, the lowest approval rating for a Brazilian leader in a generation and calls for his resignation.

Rousseff accused Temer of taking a bribe of nearly $300,000 shortly after she was impeached.

Key lawmakers in Temer's alliance told Reuters, on condition of anonymity, they would halt work on proposed labour reforms if forced to vote on charges against the president.

The prosecutor found Temer guilty of accepting bribes from a giant scandal-hit meat packaging company.

Batista secretly recorded Temer in an allegedly compromising discussion and gave the recording to prosecutors in a plea bargain to secure leniency in his own corruption case.

Executives at JBS, a Batista company, testified that Mr. Temer had negotiated millions of dollars in illegal campaign donations for his Brazilian Democratic Movement Party.

Instead of resigning after the leak of the secret tape, Brazil's President Temer declared he was going to fight to serve out his term which ends on December 31, 2018.

Meanwhile, Temer's public support is very low, with violent demonstrations attended by thousands of protesters taking place all across Brazil.

One third of his cabinet is under investigation and four former presidents plus dozens of politicians.

The family of the former chairman, Joesley M. Batista, controls JBS through a holding company.

Janot has said that without a doubt, Brazil's president Michel Temer has committed crimes of corruption. Temer would then be suspended for six months for the trial.Janot is also probing Temer for alleged obstruction of justice and membership of a criminal group. That luck ran out when bribery charges were filed Monday.

He said that as a lawyer, he knew when accusations had basis and when they did not.

On Monday, Temer released his latest statement on the on-going investigation during his first address after his return from Norway and Russian Federation.

The prosecutors "created a soap opera plot", Temer said in a brief statement to reporters and allies, his first comments since the charge sheet was presented. Temer just replaced leftist former president Dilma Rousseff a year ago.
