"The state's data show that even during the early months of the law's implementation, the law was working well and terminally ill Californians were able to take comfort in knowing that they had this option to peacefully end intolerable suffering", Matt Whitaker, who works for Compassion & Choices, an advocacy group for the law, told the Times.

The data from the California Department of Public Health found that 191 individuals received prescriptions for aid-in-dying drugs between June 9, 2016, and December 31 of the same year.

A little more than 75 percent of the patients were between 60 and 89 years old, with the median age being 73. The data was part of the California Department of Public Health's first report on the law since it went into effect June 9, 2016.

Twenty-one more patients died before they could take the drugs.

90 percent of the patients who died were white, and 58 percent had attained a bachelor's degree or higher. A majority (59%) had been diagnosed with cancer.

Justin Gilbert reportedly suspended for a year
Keep in mind that he was a unanimous 2013 All-American playing for Mike Gundy's Oklahoma State Cowboys in the Big 12. The absolutely horrendous first-round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns takes another turn for the worse.

The Times reported that physician-assisted deaths made up six out of every 10,000 deaths in California between June and December 2016, much lower than the 2016 rate in OR, where lethal prescriptions accounted for 37 per 10,000 deaths.

California officials said caution should be exercised in trying to draw conclusions from the report that is based on only six months of data.

California is 1 of 6 states where medical aid in dying is authorized - Colorado, Montana, Oregon, Vermont and Washington - along with the District of Columbia that represent 18 percent of the nation's population.

While California is significantly more diverse than OR, the California Dept. of Health report almost mirrors what has been occurring in Oregon.

A total of 173 doctors filled out prescriptions for the life-ending drugs.
