A Phoenix, Ariz., woman and her family were given 21 years of free flights on Spirit Airlines after she gave birth, mid-flight, to a healthy baby boy.

A USA plane gained one more passenger when a woman gave birth mid-flight.

"Everybody kept telling me, 'No, no, no, don't push". Penton said Tuesday she knew there was some risk in flying in her third trimester, but she had had a completely normal pregnancy and no indication that she would go into labor early.

"He did what he wanted", she said, laughing and glancing down at Christoph, who was cradled in her arms.

"Everything started happening very quickly", Penton told WGNO.

"He's going to be mad", Penton laughed as she recalled, "because he missed it". When Christoph's family shares the story of his birth, they can show off his birth certificate which will list Louisiana as his birth location and "Other - airplane" as his place of birth. "We just experienced the birth of a baby in the seat in front of us on our flight and had to do an emergency landing in New Orleans", Starks wrote.

Wallström told local media she has talked to Gustafsson, who is "in good spirits and overwhelmed by everything that is happening". Gustafsson, McGowan and Dutchman Sjaak Rijke were abducted by al-Qaeda in Timbuktu, northern Mali, in November 2011.

The Spirit Airlines flight was promptly diverted to New Orleans, and a pediatrician and nurse on board helped deliver baby Christopher. "But our flight attendants are trained to handle medical emergencies in flight and they have access to doctors on the ground via in-flight communication. I just think it was handled in such a positive way". "From the time that her contractions started to the time the baby was delivered, the plane was still in the air, so the baby was actually born on-board", Berry told TODAY.

"I feel a connection, a different kind of connection", Starks said.

"A baby being born during a flight is very rare", Spirit spokesman Paul Berry said in a statement.

When Penton notified flight attendants that she wasn't feeling well, attendants went into action and notified doctors on the ground to see if any medical professional were on board.

Yesterday, Spirit representatives visited Ms Penton and Christoph, and gifted him with free birthday flights for life for himself and a guest.

Once the plane landed, the woman and baby Christoph were taken a local hospital.
