As Merkel hosts leaders including U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Germany's second-largest city, organizers are aiming to gather as many as 100,000 anti-capitalist demonstrators for a mass rally on Saturday.

Asked in an interview with weekly Die Zeit whether she would repeat that comment, she replied: "Yes, exactly that way".

"There is a danger that the summit will lead to polarisation between the USA and other countries" on climate change and other issues, warned Oxford Analytics economist Adam Slater.

Special security groups from the Netherlands and Austria will also take part in the security operation in Hamburg, which will be responsible for ensuring that heads of state and government, as well as thousands of members of delegations arriving at the summit, safely travel through the city.

Mr Turnbull, who will meet with Ms Merkel on the eve of the summit on Thursday, is expected to be a key ally as she seeks to overcome Mr Trump's political parochialism.

A police spokesman quoted by the AFP news agency put the turnout at the protest at around 10,000, while the organisers said the figure was far higher. But the G20 meeting in Hamburg next week will be different.

But with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan joining him at the Group of 20 meetings in Germany this week, Trump is unlikely to be the only target for demonstrators.

They will patrol the city's airport, the main railways station, the port of Hamburg and even the Elbe River.

Several people were injured, and police confirmed they used pepper spray against "acts of resistance". "It is written in Hamburg's state law that Hamburg is a peaceful mediator of people's conflicts", he said.

Officials expect 8,000 from Europe's violent left-wing scene, and have been tracking known activists coming in from Scandinavia, Switzerland, Italy and elsewhere, said Hamburg police chief Ralf Martin Meyer.
