Charlie Gard's dad yells, mom weeps after brain scan called 'sad'

Charlie Gard in Great Ormond Street Hospital

Doctors and nurses at London's Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) have been receiving death threats over the treatment of terminally ill Charlie Gard.

But the case was reopened earlier this month at England's High Court after two overseas hospitals approached GOSH with possible evidence of alternative treatments that might help Charlie's condition.

The highest courts in the United Kingdom and Europe have sided with the medical professionals at the Great Ormond Street Hospital, repeatedly ruling that continuing treatment offers no benefit to little Charlie Gard.

British and European courts have already said his life support should be ended so that he can die with dignity.

Charlie suffers from a rare genetic condition called mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome that causes progressive muscle weakness and has left him with brain damage and unable to breathe without a ventilator.

Charlie's parents Chris Gard and Connie Yates are campaigning for their son to be allowed to undergo a therapy trial overseen by a specialist in NY.

"In recent weeks the GOSH community has been subjected to a shocking and disgraceful tide of hostility and disturbance".

MacLeod said families visiting other ill children have also been "harassed and discomforted" on the grounds of the hospital.

Sears to Sell Smart Appliances on Amazon
Sears shares jumped almost 20% after the news, marking perhaps a glimmer of hope for the one-time appliance giant. Amazon's Alexa assistant is now able to control an even wider range of home appliances.

Staff have received abuse in the street as well as via online messages. Basically, the court is deliberating on whether Charlie's parents can be allowed to take him to U.S. for further treatment or not.

Hospital chairwoman Mary MacLeod said the London police have been contacted because of numerous threats received by the hospital's employees.

Charlie's parents have lost all previous court cases, including one before the European Court of Human Rights, which were created to force the hospital to let them bring their son to the United States for an experimental treatment.

The Gards, whose case is being followed by US President Donald Trump, were last week granted legal and permanent residence by the US Congress in order to pursue the experimental treatment.

Mr Gard added: "We have always acted in Charlie's best interests and we have never slated gosh publicly, in fact we have been grateful to the staff for their care despite some conflicting issues".

At a pre-court hearing on Friday, a lawyer for the hospital, Katie Gollop, said that the results of the child's latest brain scans make for "sad reading", the Associated Press reported.

Friday's hearing was the first time his parents were told about the latest results in the crucial test of Charlie's brain function.
