Patrick Lefort, a spokesman for the Canada Border Services Agency, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation there is now a backlog of asylum seekers at Roxham Road, a popular crossing point near Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle, Quebec.

To accommodate the rising number of people illegally crossing the border from the United States into Canada in order to seek asylum, Montreal has had to set up Olympic Stadium as a temporary shelter.

Since late July, more than 2,500 Haitians have fled the United States seeking asylum in Canada, crossing the border into the Francophone province of Quebec.

The soldiers will have no role in security matters and will not participate in law-enforcement tasks.

The camp is being built in anticipation of a large influx of asylum seekers from the USA, said Stéphane Malépart, a spokesperson for Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).

Officials said once the site was completed, only a few will soldiers will stay behind. Even before the flow of Haitian asylum seekers Canada was on track to have the most refugee claims in nearly a decade.

The city's old Royal Victoria Hospital, which closed in 2015, will also be opened up to new arrivals, provincial authorities said Wednesday.

The construction begins about a week after Montreal turned its Olympic Stadium into a shelter for refugees arriving from the US.

"There is an enormous amount of fake information circulating saying that it is easy to come to Canada", said Marjorie Villefranche, general manager of Maison d'Haiti, a Montreal community center that assists Haitian immigrants.

In the United States, the Trump administration is considering ending a program that granted Haitians so-called "temporary protected status" following the massive quake that struck Haiti in 2010.
