Kenya Election Was Hacked, Says Opposition Leader Raila Odinga, Raising Fears of Violence

Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga said on Wednesday the election commission's computers had been hacked and fake results posted online, in what he described as a "massive" poll fraud to show President Uhuru Kenyatta with a strong lead.

"It is a sign of leadership and public service to be able to congratulate your opponent with grace as a normal and important part of democracy", Marietje Schaake, head of the European Union mission, said in a statement Friday.

But the opposition professed to have obtained internal commission figures showing that its candidate had defeated the incumbent president, Uhuru Kenyatta.

Mudavadi said Odinga had won slightly more than 8 million votes, compared with 7.1 million for Kenyatta.

According to the website, results are in from 98 percent of polling stations, however the IEBC has urged patience as it cross-checks results with scanned forms.

Odinga has yet to speak after the results were announced, but nearly immediate protests erupted Friday night in his strongholds in western Kisumu county and poor areas of Nairobi, with gunshots ringing out and fires lit in the streets.

Foreign observer missions declined to comment but urged all parties to stay calm while results were cross-checked with paper records.

Celebrations erupted in opposition strongholds that have also seen angry protests over Odinga's rigging claims, which sparked a gloomy sense of deja vu in a country that witnessed disputed polls in 2007 and 2013. Some hovered around the scene in a helicopter. One injured man in Kawangware was carried away by protesters who said police shot him.

He urged all sides to wait for the final results, and for the loser to accept defeat.

The electoral body had earlier indicated of a possible announcement of the presidential results, however at 4pm the president elect was yet to be known.

Meanwhile, the party executive will meet within 28 days to set the rules for a leadership election process. He said the new government should revise MLA pension plans introduced 10 years ago by the BC Liberals.

"There are gunshots all over; we don't know how it will end but we are praying for peace", said Kisumu resident Lucas Odhiambo, adding that people were bellowing through "vuvuzela" noisemakers when the results were announced "and police moved in".

But the opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) doubled down on accusations the counting process was a "sham" after Odinga claimed Wednesday that hackers broke into the electronic tallying system and manipulated results. He claimed the hackers used the identity of Christopher Msando, an election official in charge of managing information technology systems.

On Thursday many businesses remained closed and the streets were very quiet in the capital and elsewhere as the country held its breath. "The nation is sitting precariously on the precipice".

The IEBC said there had been an attempt to hack its system, but it failed. "As NASA we shall not be party to the process they are about to make", senior opposition official Musalia Mudavadi told reporters.

Millions of Kenyans went to the polling stations on Tuesday in the third presidential elections since the 2007 elections when rage over former President Mwai Kibaki's disputed re-election killed more than 1,200 people, injured 3,500 and forcibly displaced up to 650,000 others.

"Even if I am celebrating, let me celebrate in a way that will not provoke the other person because if I celebrate in a way that provokes another person, that escalates that feeling of people fighting of which we don't want", said Otieno.

The envoys in a joint statement issued in Nairobi said they have been moved and inspired by the commitment millions of Kenyans have shown to having their voices heard through the ballot box.

After a hard-fought campaign, global observers praised the commission's handling of the election and urged Kenyans to give members time to complete their work, which will include checking the electronic results against paper records.

Chebukati said yesterday that the commission expects to collect all documentation relating to the election results by mid-day today. "It's important they have the time to do these procedures well".
